Demo Day Is Here

I’ve demoed a bathroom, ripped up concrete, and had my fair share of fun with some ivy and a chainsaw once but I’ve never been involved in a floor-to-ceiling demo day/week and all I can say is wow! Our A-team worked their butts off to get this place demolished in one week and all I could do was make sure they had enough cheese bread from the local Schat’s Bakery to keep them going.

All the bathroom mirrors will be reused which is great because that’s a lot of glass to waste and have to repurchase.

We got a lot of wins during demolition and one of them was the bathroom mirrors. We were able to remove the originals with those big suction cups they use to move glass around and we will reinstall them after the walls are painted. This made me so happy because I hate to waste good materials and it saved money not having to replace such big pieces of glass.

There are good surprises (like the mirrors) and bad surprises (a weak subfloor to replace) during demo and we had our share of both. One of the good surprises was that we were able to rip out the shower ceilings and add a few feet to what felt like a very horror film kind of shower experience. We also added lights that weren’t there before so this will go from Psycho to (what’s a good shower scene reference?)

Already feeling better with that gross carpet out. There are some areas of the subfloor (the floor under the carpet and/or hardwood) that will have to be replaced becasue of water damage, but it is minor...thank goodness! Not going to miss that green paint, not even a little.

This is (or will be) the “great room” and what makes it great are the high ceilings and these beautiful wood beams. They’ve been hiding under lots of dirt but once we started sanding them down we realized they are redwood and they are gorge! So we’re going to pick a finish that will let their natural beauty shine through. It will match the wood bar top in the kitchen and the staircase rails which we learned are also redwood. The wood in between them will be painted. It's not great quality so I’m hoping after a good sanding and lots of prime and paint they end up with a shiplap look. The ceiling wood stays as it is. In a dreamworld I would replace it all with gorgeous reclaimed wood, maybe next time (prayer hands emojii).
